Gem Roller Rink - A short lived "Gem" for skaters

The Gem opened in 1949 at 200 South Locust. For just 3 years it was a first-class facility for those who loved roller skating. Remember?

General Manager George Helling promoted The Gem as a great place for private parties including this unique event in November 1950.

Organ music became an integral part of the roller skating experience in the 1940s and early 50s. Radio personality Bob Gribben performed many times   at The Gem.

The Gem's life was short-lived when a developer sold the land for the new "United Supermarket" which became Eagle and now the location of HyVee.
